Barna Benedek

The artist, who was born in Budapest in 1973 and still lives there today, studied visual education at the University of Pécs from 1996-2001, where he also received his doctorate in humanities in 2007. Today he is a lecturer at the Budapest Metropolitan University and has already received several official awards in his artistic career.

The main elements in Benedek’s work are abstract, structural views of geometric shapes and curved lines. The artist uses the phenomenon of the moiré effect. Several grids, superimposed, result in surprising and hypnotic impressions in front of the eye of the recipient.
This corresponds entirely to the essence of OP Art: a style that developed in the 1960s and, with its complex and abstract form and color patterns, creates the illusion of movement and optical effects in the viewer.
Benedek takes up this geometric abstraction in his works and thus creates a commentary on our current perception of visuality. Amazing form constructs, divergent tendencies and diverse symbioses are implemented in pictures. With their vibrant expressiveness, they evoke a confusing momentum and give the depicted spatiality a surprising and new dimension. His works captivate the viewer with their translucent optics and the resulting and changing play of light and shadow.
Barna Benedek’s works were already on view in 2018, on the occasion of the 5th presentation of the International André Evard Prize for concrete-constructive art, in the messmer art gallery and in 2020 in the solo exhibition “Transition” in the Messmer gallery.
