Susanne Zuehlke is one of the most important positions in contemporary abstract painting in southern Germany. For many years she has been developing an independent pictorial language in which color, light and space enter into a floating balance . Her works are created using the traditional technique of egg tempera – a sophisticated layered painting technique that enables transparency, depth and subtle light effects. The slow build-up of numerous layers of paint gives her paintings a special depth and an almost breathing luminosity.
The artist studied painting at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe under Professors Harry Kögler and Helmut Dorner. She was awarded a scholarship to the University of Arizona in Tucson, USA, at an early stage. International experiences – including participation in the Luxor International Painting Symposium in Egypt – have shaped her artistic approach to this day and expanded her view of color, light and architectural space.
Zuehlke’s works move between constructive abstraction and poetic openness. Rectangles, areas of color and rhythmic structures seem to shift in the pictorial space, to float or dissolve in the light. This creates a subtle tension between order and freedom, clarity and atmosphere. Her compositions appear both concentrated and open – reduced in form but rich in painterly nuance.
Her work focuses less on the expressive gestural and more on the quiet effect of color and light. The pictures unfold slowly in the viewer’s gaze and open up spaces of concentration and perception. It is precisely this calm and precision that lends her works a special timeless quality.
Her works have been presented in numerous renowned galleries and exhibitions – including at ART Karlsruhe, Kunsthalle Dresden, Museum Würth and international exhibitions. Susanne Zuehlke’s works can also be found in private and public collections.
