The GALERIE MESSMER hosted a special guest this summer: the Korean artist SEO from Berlin. She is one of the stars of the contemporary art scene! Her works are a game of colours and perspectives that challenge the viewer’s sensations time and again.
Born around 1977 in Gwangju, in the province of Seoul, SEO moved to Berlin in 2001 to visit the University of the Arts. There she became a master student of Professor Georg Baselitz from 2003 to 2004.
In addition to top-class prizes such as the Beijing Art Award, the Leopold-Hoesch Museum’s Milestone, and the National Art Museum of China’s Award of Excellent Painting, SEO also received a scholarship as the best student at Cho-sun University. She has already taken part in several biennials, such as the 54th Venice Biennial and the Animamix Biennial in Shanghai. Her works are already represented in important collections such as the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), the Federal Chancellery, the German Embassy in Tehran and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Santander, Spain. There are also numerous solo and group exhibitions in major galleries and museums around the world, from New York to Berlin, from Beijing to Milan.
Finally, SEO describes her work as follows: “In my work, I have always focused on the theme of globalization and its impact on the environment, culture, and people. I use the techniques of collage, deconstruction, the construction of pictorial elements and motivs from Far Eastern and Western environments to approach the subject from different positions, both formally and in terms of content, while always working out the essence of things.
The exhibition of the Korean artist SEO in the GALERIE MESSMER was a great success. Mostly new works were shown, which had never been presented to the public before.
