Anyone who encounters a work by Patrizia Casagranda quickly realizes that there is far more going on here than just painting. Born in Stuttgart in 1979, the German-Italian artist—who now lives in Krefeld and works in Germany, the Netherlands, and India—is one of the leading figures in contemporary German art.
With her distinctive “Sculptural Dot Paintings,” she has made a name for herself internationally and has been honored with, among other awards, the “Lorenzo il Magnifico Award” at the Florence Biennale (2021 and 2023), the “Awarded Artist” title at the Biennale d’Arte di Roma, the Spotlight Award at Art Expo New York, and the Golden Art Award at the Osten Biennale.
In her “Sculptural Dot Paintings,” Patrizia Casagranda (b. 1979) combines the tradition of classical portrait painting with a relief-like, three-dimensional visual language that uniquely unites painting, object, and structure.
Using a proprietary process that combines historical pigments with a special mortar-plaster mixture, the artist creates works of extraordinary spatial presence, whose effect changes with every shift in light and viewing angle .
In her artistic language, Casagranda combines influences from Pop Art, urban art, material art, and recycling art into a distinctive contemporary visual aesthetic. Relief-like dot patterns, typographic fragments, stencils, grids, and spray-painted surfaces combine with recycled materials to form multi-layered compositions whose motifs are often only fully revealed when viewed from a greater distance.
The German artist has been working as a freelance artist since 2016 and has made a name for herself internationally with her distinctive technique. People —especially women— are at the center of Casagranda’s work:
She portrays iconic figures from art history—such as “Girl with a Pearl Earring” or “Golden Kahlo”—as well as women from diverse cultures and social contexts.
Her works explore identity, dignity, diversity, and humanity, addressing themes such as equality, tolerance, humanism, and cultural dialogue. Series such as “Belief” and “Diversity” examine religion, social diversity, and respectful coexistence. In doing so, the artist avoids simplistic statements and creates images that are emotionally moving while also raising social questions.
Casagranda laid the foundation for her career by earning an outstanding degree in design with a focus on illustration. She then worked as a graphic designer and art director, developing concepts for artists including Günther Uecker (1930–2025) and Markus Lüpertz ( b. 1941). This creative precision continues to shape her art to this day.
Her works combine aesthetic innovation with social engagement and draw attention to key issues of our time: respect, humanity, the environment, and how we treat one another.
